What are Timeless Jewels?

Beginner Level5 minute readUpdated December 2024

Timeless jewels are powerful unique jewels in Path of Exile that fundamentally transform how your passive skill tree works by altering existing passive skills within their radius.

Introduction

Timeless jewels were introduced to Path of Exile as part of the Legion league and represent one of the most complex and powerful itemization systems in the game. Unlike regular jewels that simply add stats, timeless jewels completely transform existing passive skills within their area of effect.

Key Point
Timeless jewels don't add new passive skills—they transform existing ones into completely different effects based on the jewel's type and seed number.

The Five Types

There are five distinct types of timeless jewels, each with unique transformation patterns and thematic effects:

Lethal Pride

Transforms passives into strength-based bonuses and Karui-themed effects. Great for melee builds and life stacking.

Brutal Restraint

Provides dexterity-based bonuses and Maraketh-themed effects. Excellent for speed and evasion builds.

Militant Faith

Adds devotion mechanics and Templar-themed transformations. Unique devotion point system.

Elegant Hubris

Intelligence-based bonuses and Eternal Empire effects. Perfect for spell casters and energy shield builds.

Glorious Vanity

Vaal-themed transformations with corruption mechanics. High risk, high reward transformations.

How They Work

When you socket a timeless jewel, it affects all allocated passive skills within its radius. The exact transformations depend on three factors:

  1. Jewel Type: Determines the theme and general type of transformations
  2. Seed Number: The specific number that determines exact transformations
  3. Socket Position: Where you place the jewel on the passive tree
Important
Only allocated (taken) passive skills are transformed. Empty passive skills are not affected, but can be allocated for their new effects after transformation.

Seeds and Randomization

Every timeless jewel has a seed number (typically between 500-40,000) that determines exactly which transformations occur. This means:

  • Two identical jewel types with the same seed will have identical effects
  • Different seeds of the same jewel type can have completely different transformations
  • The seed is visible in the jewel's flavor text
  • Seeds make each timeless jewel unique and valuable

Strategic Considerations

Using timeless jewels effectively requires careful planning:

Planning Your Build

  • Design your passive tree around the timeless jewel's effects
  • Consider which passives you're willing to lose to transformation
  • Plan for both the benefits and drawbacks of transformations
  • Test different seed numbers to find optimal results
